MANCHESTER, N.H. - A goal by Danielle Deschene (Salisbury,
MA) in the 54th minute lifted the University of Bridgeport women's
soccer team to a 1-0 win over Southern New Hampshire University in
the second round of the SNHU Tournament Monday afternoon at Larkin
Field. The Purple Knights, the preseason favorite in the East
Coast Conference coaches' poll, improves to 2-1-1 on the season,
while the Penmen are 1-2-1 on the campaign.
After a scoreless first half,
Bridgeport got on the board at the 53:17 mark when Elin Harin
(Stockholm, Sweden) made a long pass to her right to a streaking
Deschene. After two dribbles, Deschene fired a 20-yarder that
went into the left side of the goal past SNHU keeper Stef
Young (Natick, MA).
Elina Yletyinen (Lulea, Sweden)
made three saves en route to the shutout for Bridgeport.
Young stopped five UB shot attempts as the guests outshot SNHU
13-6. The Penmen also recorded a pair of team saves on the
afternoon.
SNHU returns to Northeast-10 play
on Wednesday afternoon when it entertains Assumption College in a
4:00 match at Larkin Field.
