SNHU and Saint Anselm battle it out in women's basketball. Longtime intra-city rivals, Southern New Hampshire University and Saint Anselm College began competing for the Queen City Cup beginning in the 2014-15 academic year. The two schools, who have an over 40-year tradition of competition against one another, sit less than seven miles apart in Manchester, New Hampshire, the state's largest city.

The two schools meet in 17Ā different sports annually. For team sports, points will be awarded based on head-to-head meetings, both during the regular season as well as in the postseason.Ā  For individual sports, such as golf and cross country, the results from the Northeast-10 Championship will be utilized.

HISTORY

SNHU (then-New Hampshire College) and Saint Anselm have been playing each other since May 5, 1969, when Saint Anselm posted a 9-0 home victory in men's tennis against then-New Hampshire College. The first pitch in baseball was thrown on April 21, 1971, the Penmen locked up a 6-1 victory at home. Nov. 10, 1976, saw the start of women's volleyball with a 2-0 Saint Anselm road win. Women's basketball opened their rivalry on Feb. 2, 1977, when Saint Anselm posted a 53-40 road victory. Later that year on Sept. 15, the Hawks kicked off the men's soccer series with a 3-0 win at home before pulling out a 56-50 home victory in men's basketball two months later on Nov. 27.

To this day, the men's basketball rivalry is the fiercest between the two schools and it shows as Saint Anselm leads the all-time series 38-35 following the 2019-20Ā campaign.

In fitting fashion, softball opened their series with a split at Saint Anselm on April 14, 1981, as SNHU posted a 12-3 winSNHU and Saint Anselm go head-to-head on the baseball diamond. in the first game before the Hawks flipped the script for a 13-3 victory in game two. Men's ice hockey dropped the puck for the first time five months later as Saint Anselm cruised to an 11-3 home win on Nov. 13. Women's tennis squared off for the first time on Sept. 26, 1983, with Saint Anselm tallying up a 9-0 road win. Women's soccer took to the pitch a year and a day later on Sept. 27, 1984, as the Penmen threw up an 8-0 blanking.

SNHU quickly went on to a 17-5 victory in the inaugural men's lacrosse meeting on April 18, 1994. The rivalry as a whole received a bump in 2000 when SNHU joined the Northeast-10 Conference, ensuring the teams would meet up at least once a year across all sports. Women's lacrosse got underway on April 19, 2004, with a 16-7 Saint Anselm road win while the two teams met in field hockey for the first time in the fall of 2014.

Southern New Hampshire prevailed 22-12 in the inaugural Queen City Cup in 2014-15, winning a convincing 26-10 decision in 2015-16. SNHU's 20-14 victory in 2016-17 was the closest the Cup had come to switching hands before Saint Anselm scored a 21-15 victory for its first Cup in 2017-18. The two schools tied, 19-19, in 2018-19, before the COVID-19 Pandemic shortened the 2019-20 battle. The Penmen returned to the win column with a 20-14 victory in 2021-22 and won again 21-13Ā in 2023-24, and completed a three-peat in 2024-25, 23-17.

HOW IT WORKS

-Sports in which the teams meet once per season: two points for a win, one for a tie
-Sports in which the teams meet more than once per season: two points for winning the series, one for tying
-Golf, track & field,Ā and cross country: a team that finishes higher in the Northeast-10 Championship will earn two points, one if they tie
-Postseason meetings, including Northeast-10 Championship or NCAA Tournament clashes, will count separately from the regular season and will award two points to the winner
-A maximum of four points can be earned per team during an athletic season
