NEW HAVEN, Conn. -
No. 4 seed and host Southern Connecticut State University scored
twice in the second half as it eliminated fifth-seeded Southern New
Hampshire University in the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10
Women's Soccer Championship Sunday afternoon at Jess Dow
Field. The Owls, who advance to face top-seeded Franklin
Pierce in Thursday's semifinals, improve to 12-4-2. The
Penmen, who were making their first NE-10 tourney appearance since
2005, finish their season 8-6-4 overall.
After a scoreless first half, SCSU
would get on the board just past the 57 minute mark when Nicole
Burton converted a penalty kick to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.
Southern Connecticut would add an insurance goal in the
82nd minute. An initial shot attempt by Jenna
Mallico glanced off the post, but Maria Primmer put home the
rebound.
Katie DiDio stopped five shots en
route to the shutout for Southern Connecticut. Stef
Young (Natick, MA) turned aside seven shots for the
Penmen, who were outshot 17-9, including 13-1 in the second half.
