BOSTON - Host Wentworth Institute of Technology scored
seven unanswered goals in the second and third periods en route to
a 10-2 ECAC Northeast ice hockey victory over Southern New
Hampshire University at Matthews Arena Saturday night. The
Leopards improved to 9-12-1 overall and 8-4-1 in league play, while
the Penmen are now 9-11-1 overall and 6-7-1 in ECAC play.
Nine different players scored for
Wentworth, led by Jeff Olitch's two goals. Three players
totaled a goal and an assist while Andrew Affronti handed out three
assists.
SNHU trailed 3-0 just 11:53 into
the game but scored twice in the final 2:31 of the first period to
trail 3-2 after the first intermission. At the 17:29 mark
Brandon Hammermeister (Calgary, ALB) got SNHU on
the board when he scored on a power play. Kent
Honeyman (Marietta, GA) and Troy Maybury
(South Portland, ME) assisted on the goal. With 11 seconds
left before intermission, John Frey (Westminster,
CO) scored on a feed from Ed Montgomery
(Colchester, VT).
Wentworth would score four times in
the second period to take a 7-2 lead after two periods, then struck
three more times in the third to account for the 10-2 final.
Justin Marriott made 12 saves over
the first two periods for the Leopards before giving way to Matt
Buchan, who stopped all seven shots he faced. Wentworth
outshot SNHU 50-21. Matt Courchesne (Bow,
NH) allowed five goals and stopped 15 shots over the first 27:20
before giving way to Shane Brooks (Kennebunk, ME),
who gave up two goals and stopped 14 shots over the final 12:40 of
the second period. Todd Rowley (Billerica,
MA) allowed three goals and made 11 saves in the final frame.
SNHU returns to action Wednesday
night when it travels to Stonehill College for a 7:00 non-league
game.
