HOOKSETT, N.H. - Freshman Troy Maybury
(South Portland, ME) registered two goals and two assists to lift
Southern New Hampshire University to a 5-3 victory over Assumption
College in the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 ice hockey
tournament Saturday night at The Ice Den. The third-seeded
Penmen improve to 12-12-1 and advance to face second-seeded Saint
Anselm in Wednesday night's semifinals. The No. 6 seed
Greyhounds see their season end at 7-19 overall.
Maybury had a hand in each of
SNHU's first four goals. Brandon
Hammermeister (Calgary, ALB) totaled a goal and an assist
for the Penmen, who also got two assists from Ed
Montgomery (Colchester, VT). Matt
Farley (Halifax, MA) and Andrew Hildreth
(Leominster, MA) had SNHU's other goals.
Sean Staid
(Peabody, MA) led Assumption with a goal and an assist, while
Jim Trahon (Needham, MA) and Frank
Bova (Princeton, MA) had the other Greyhound goals.
Assumption got out to a quick 1-0
lead just 2:17 into the game when Bova scored on an assist from
Staid. The Penmen would tie it up 4:11 later when Maybury
scored the first of his two goals, with Montgomery and Kent
Honeyman (Marietta, GA) assisting. The score
remained tied 1-1 heading into the first intermission.
The Penmen would score twice in a
span of 32 seconds to take a 3-1 lead in the second. Farley
scored at the 13:53 mark when he redirected a feed from Maybury
from the right board to make it 2-0. Montgomery also
assisted. Maybury scored again at the 14:25 mark on assists
from Bob Bryant (Nashua, NH) and
Hammermeister. The Greyhounds would cut the lead to 3-2 1:31
before the second intermission when Staid scored on an Assumption
power play.
Hildreth scored the eventual
game-winner 35 seconds into the third when he converted a pass from
Maybury on a power play. Assumption would cut the lead in
half once again 24 seconds shy of the midway point of the frame
when Trahon added another power play goal. The Penmen would
close out the scoring on a power play at 15:48 when Hammermeister
scored on assists from Ryan DiBartolomeo
(Leominster, MA) and Neil Adams (Gardner, MA).
Shane Brooks
(Kennebunk, ME) turned aside 29 Assumption shots to earn the
victory, while Assumption netminder Jamie DiGiulio
(Peabody, MA) made 33 saves.
Saint Anselm took down a 4-0 win in
the lone meeting between the Hawks and Penmen earlier this season.
