SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -
Host Saint Michael's College scored the game's final three goals as
it posted a 5-3 Northeast-10 ice hockey victory over Southern New
Hampshire University Tuesday night at Cairns Arena. The
Purple Knights improve to 7-9-2 and 3-1 in the Northeast-10, while
the Penmen fall to 6-10 and 2-1 in the league.
John
Frey (Westminster, CO), Mark Smith (Ronkonkoma,
NY) and Doug
Boulanger (Beauport, Quebec) each scored goals for
SNHU, while Dave
Carroll (Arlington, MA) handed out a pair of
assists. Ryan Mero led Saint Michael's with two goals and two
assists.
After entering the third period tied 2-2, Southern New Hampshire
took a 3-2 lead at the 4:05 mark of the third when he scored on a
power play. Troy Maybury (South
Portland, ME) and Bob
Bryant (Nashua, NH) registered assists on the
play. The Purple Knights tied the game at the 10:15 mark on a
power play tally by Mero, and took the lead for good 3:04 later on
Brady Merle's first goal of the season. Chris Healey added an
empty net goal for SMC with two seconds remaining after the Penmen
pulled netminder Shane Brooks
(Kennebunk, ME) with 40 seconds left.
Frey gave the Penmen a 1-0 lead 6:58 into the game on a power
play tally. Ryan
DiBartolomeo (Leominster, MA) and Carroll assisted on
the goal. Saint Michael's tied it 1:04 before the first
intermission when Mero scored his first goal of the evening.
The hosts took a 2-1 lead 3:20 into the second frame on Nicholas
Sheehan's goal, but SNHU would tie the game at the 16:47 mark of
the frame on Boulanger's goal. Jake Berube
(Spotsylvania, VA) and Carroll assisted on the score.
Brendan Rimmer turned aside 35 SNHU shots en route to the win
for Saint Michael's, while Brooks made 29 saves as the Penmen
generated a 38-34 shot advantage.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Saturday night when it
hosts Worcester State College in a 7:00 contest at The Ice Den.
