HOOKSETT, N.H. - Bobby Bryant (Nashua, N.H.) scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner with 12:40 remaining in the third period to snap a 4-4 tie, to lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 5-4 Northeast-10 ice hockey victory over Franklin Pierce University Tuesday night at The Ice Den. The Penmen, who snapped a 10-game winless streak (0-9-1), improved to 3-9-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the NE-10, while the Ravens are now 4-12-2 and 1-5-1 in the league.
Besides Bryant, SNHU got single goals from Troy Maybury (South Portland, Maine), William Toomey (Reading, Mass.) and Ryan DiBartolomeo (Leominster, Mass.). Anthony Dercole (Hamden, Conn.) had a pair of assists for the Penmen.
Anthony Chighisola led Franklin Pierce with two goals and an assist, while Roscoe Sweeney totaled a goal and three assists. Matt Lopes had the other Raven tally.
Southern New Hampshire carried a 4-3 lead into the final frame, but Franklin Pierce tied the game 6:07 into the third when Lopes scored on a feed from Sweeney in a 4-on-4 situation. The Penmen reclaimed the lead 2:14 later when Bryant scored on a power play. Dercole and Brandon Bradley (Wichita, Kansas) assisted on the game-winner. Franklin Pierce would have a 5-on-3 with seven minutes remaining but SNHU was able to kill it off. The Ravens pulled goalie Jon Tuttle with 48 seconds left but could not come up with the equalizer.
Franklin Pierce took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Chighisola at the 9:50 mark of the first period, but the Penmen would tie the game 1:01 later. An initial shot by Dercole from the left point was turned aside by Tuttle, but Bryant fired home the rebound. Chighisola would give FPU a 2-1 lead at the first intermission with his second goal of the period at the 16:24 mark.
Toomey tied the game for Southern New Hampshire 4:44 into the second period after he put home a rebound of a shot by John Frey (Westminster, Colo.). Adam Ziegler (Medford, Mass.) also assisted on the goal. The Ravens took the lead once again at the 12:04 mark when Sweeney converted on a Franklin Pierce 5-on-3.
The Penmen scored twice in the final 4:05 of the second period to take a 4-3 lead. Bryant created a turnover in the Raven zone and flipped it to Maybury, who skated in alone on Tuttle and beat him high. Southern New Hampshire took its first lead with 57 seconds left in the second. DiBartolomeo fired a shot from his knees in front of the Raven goal that got past Tuttle. Doug Boulanger (Beauport, Quebec) assisted on the goal.
Mike Mastracci (Pittsburgh, Pa.) made 30 saves to earn the win in net for Southern New Hampshire, while Tuttle turned aside 25 shots as the Ravens outshot the Penmen 34-30. SNHU was 1-6 on the power play while Franklin Pierce was 1-7 with the man advantage.
Southern New Hampshire is idle until Thursday, January 28, when it travels to UMass Dartmouth for a 7:30 contest.
