HOOKSETT, N.H.--The Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team skated to a 3-2 overtime victory over the Stonehill Skyhawks Tuesday night in Hooksett, N.H. The Penmen collect their second straight victory while improving to 4-9-2 overall and 2-2-1 in Northeast-10 Conference play. The Skyhawks fall to 3-11-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the NE-10.
Chris Hickey (Gilford, N.H.) scored his fifth goal of the season, the game-winning goal, at 3:12 of the overtime period. Aggressive on the forecheck, Trevor Nelson (Exeter, N.H.) stole the puck away from a Stonehill player and fired a shot on net. The rebound spilled away to Hickey, who forced the puck past Stonehill goaltender Tyler Jackson for the overtime winner.
Following a scoreless first period, the Skyhawks struck first 35 seconds into the second period, as Angelo Todesca scored his 10th goal of the season to put Stonehill on the board first. At 5:20 of the second period, Tyler Gordon scored on the power play to double the Stonehill advantage.
The Penmen set up the overtime heroics by scoring two straight goals to force overtime. Brandon Sheehan (Bedford, Mass.) scored at 17:41 of the second period, with assists credited to Troy Maybury (South Portland, Maine) and Hickey.
Defenseman Neil Adams (Gardner, Mass.) scored his fourth goal of the season at 6:20 of the third period, tying the game at two apiece. From the top of the slot, Adams collected a feed from Adam Ziegler (Medford, Mass.) and one-timed a shot past Stonehill goaltender Tyler Jackson. Sheehan also collected his second point of the game, assisting on the Adams tally.
Penmen goaltender Tyler Holske (Attleboro, Mass.) stopped 34-of-36 shots on goal. Jackson halted 34-of-37 shots on net.
The Penmen return to action Thursday, January 27 as they host UMass Dartmouth in a 7:30 p.m. tilt in Hooksett, N.H.
