MANCHESTER, N.H.—Nick Mattiello and Kevin Meehan each tallied two goals to lead the Assumption College men's ice hockey team to an 8-3 win over the Southern New Hampshire University Penmen at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action. With the loss, the Penmen fall to 4-10-2 overall and 2-3-1 in NE-10 action, while the win boosts the visiting Greyhounds to 8-11-0 and 3-4-0 in league play.
After falling 2-0 in the first period off of goals by Ross White and Meehan at the 4:51 and 13:06 marks, the Penmen would begin the second period with a goal by Doug Boulanger (Beauport, Quebec) 1:33 into the second frame by collecting a loose puck in front of the net and poking it past Assumption goaltender Nick Blanchette. Brian Troy (Ashburnham, Mass.) and Trevor Nelson (Exeter, N.H.) recorded assists on the goal. 4:24 later, Brandon Bradley (Wichita, Kansas) sniped the puck at mid-ice and carried it the distance to the goal and deking Blanchette to even the game at 2-2.
The Greyhounds would waste no time reclaiming the lead, as Patrick Fitzgibbons made it 3-2 at the 7:57 mark by collecting his own saved rebound. Assumption would also see second period goals by Mike Jenson and Meehan to take the 5-2 advantage into the second intermission.
Pat O'Kane added another goal for Assumption 1:21 into the final period before Boulanger tallied his second goal of the game by one-touching a loose puck into the net. Mattiello then added back-to-back goals at the 4:16 and 8:53 marks to round out the scoring for the afternoon.
Tyler Holske (Attleboro, Mass.) took the loss in net and recorded 20 saves in just over 33 minutes before giving way to Max Paluszynski (Moorestown, N.J.), who recorded seven saves in his collegiate debut. Blanchette earned the win for the Greyhounds and totaled 18 saves as Assumption outshot Southern New Hampshire 39-21 on the afternoon.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action on Tuesday, traveling to Saint Michael's College for a 7:00 p.m. Northeast-10 Conference matchup.
