Third Period Rally Leads Fitchburg State Past Penmen in Ice Hockey

FITCHBURG, Mass.—The Fitchburg State College Falcons scored three third-period goals to post a comeback win in ice hockey over the visiting Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University on Friday evening.  With the loss, the Penmen fall to 0-3 on the season, while the win evens the Falcons' record to 1-1.

The Falcons would get on the board first as Thomas McAleer tallied a goal in the 18th minute of the first period to take the 1-0 advantage into the second frame. 

Freshman Dane Caracino (Belmont, Mass.) would waste no time evening the score at 1-1 as he tallied his second goal of the season at the 4:26 mark on assists from TJ Bond (Nashua, N.H.) and John Humphrey (Charlestown, Mass.).  1:23 later, Fitchburg State's Sean Loebs would give the Falcons the 2-1 advantage. 

The two teams would remain scoreless until the final minute of the period, when SNHU's Chris Hickey (Gilford, N.H.) scored at the 19:30 minute off an assist by Tyler Pascucci (North Reading, Mass.) to even the game at 2-2.  Bond would tally a power play goal with just 11 seconds remaining in the second frame to give the Penmen the 3-2 advantage heading into the third period.

Fitchburg State would tally goals at the 6:10 mark and the 14:56 mark to take the 4-3 lead.  Southern New Hampshire would pull goaltender Tyler Holske (Attleboro, Mass.) with a minute to go for the extra-skater advantage, but the Falcons would collect the puck and score an empty net goal to solidify the 5-3 win. 

McAleer led the Falcons with a goal and an assist on the evening, while Justin Quinn finished with two assists.  In addition to McAleer and Loebs, Kris Threlkeld and Nick Zaino tallied goals for the Falcons. 

Holske tallied 26 saves in net for the Penmen in 59:14 minutes of action.  Falcons' goaltender Randy Wolcott also recorded 26 saves en route to the win.  Fitchburg State posted a narrow 31-29 shot advantage over SNHU, while the Penmen scored twice on the power play in seven attempts.  The Falcons wrapped up the game 1-for-5 with the extra-man advantage. 

The Penmen will play in the consolation game of the ICFCU Shootout tomorrow.  The Falcons will play in the championship game at 4:00 p.m.
