MANCHESTER, N.H.—The Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Penmen fall to 1-8-1 overall and 0-3-0 in NE-10 action, while the win boosts the visiting Greyhounds to 6-5-1 and 3-2-1 in league play.
With 1:49 remaining in overtime, Assumption's Ross White would shoot, collect his own rebound, and stab the puck past SNHU goaltender Tyler Holske (Attleboro, Mass.) to record the short-handed game-winner and lead the Greyhounds to the win.
SNHU took an early lead, registering its first goal 2:43 into the first period as Charles Wisniewski (Strongsville, Ohio) intercepted the puck behind Assumptions goal and weaved it in for a short-handed goal. Assumption would even the score at 1-1 at the 6:07 mark of the first frame as Kevin Glanzman scored, assisted by Taylor Larsen.
With the score tied entering the second period, neither team would score until the 11:12 mark when SNHU's Trevor Nelson (Exeter, N.H.) tallied an unassisted goal on a deep shot that tipped off the glove of Assumption goaltender Nick Blanchette. Assumption would again even the score with 1:06 remaining in the second period on a goal by Kevin Meehan. Neither team would score in the third period, forcing the sudden-victory overtime period.
Holske recorded 34 saves in the overtime loss for the Penmen, while Blanchette tallied 50 saves en route to the win. The Penmen outshot the Greyhounds 52-37 on the afternoon. Neither team scored on the power play, with SNHU having five attempts and Assumption recording seven attempts.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action on Tuesday, December 6 when it hosts cross-town rival Saint Anselm College at 7:30 p.m. at the Ice Den.
