Hockey Rounds Out Conference Play with Loss to Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass.—Nick Mattiello and Joseph Fimiani each tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Assumption College ice hockey team to a 6-3 Northeast-10 Conference win over the visiting Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday afternoon.  With the win, the Greyhounds improve to 10-14-0 overall and 5-6-0 in NE-10 play, while the loss drops the Penmen to 4-16-2 overall and 2-8-1 in league play. 

After battling through a scoreless first period, Assumption would tally the first goal of the game 3:01 into the second frame as Dan Dearing connected on passes from Jamie Vona and Dennis White.  Mattiello added his third goal of the season 1:25 later on assists from Keven Meehan and Marc Labb.  Peter Bouchie would tack on his second goal of the season at the 5:04 mark to give the Greyhounds the 3-0 advantage.  1:59 later, Kevin Glanzman tallied the game-winning goal on the power play.  Taylor Larsen and Meehan recorded assists on the goal. 

Down 4-0, the Penmen would round on the second period with a power play goal by Craig Carbonneau (Medford, Mass.). Frank O'Connor (Arlington, Mass.) and Michael Slattery (Duxbury, Mass.) recorded assists on the goal. 

The Penmen would make it 4-2 33 ticks into the third period as Tyler Pascucci (North Reading, Mass.) connected on passes from Brandon Sheehan (Bedford, Mass.) and Adam Ziegler (Medford, Mass.).  The Greyhounds would again extend the lead to three on a goal by Dave Maiocco at the 8:07 mark, followed by a goal by Fimiani 39 seconds later.  With 3:39 left in the period, Sheehan connected on assists by Trevor Nelson (Exeter, N.H.) and Ziegler to round out scoring for the evening. 

Nick Blanchette earned the win in net for Assumption and recorded 30 saves in the complete-game effort.  Tyler Holske (Attleboro, Mass.) was credited with the loss for the Penmen and recorded 20 saves as the Penmen outshot the Greyhounds 33-26 on the evening.  Both teams finished 1-for-2 with the man-advantage. 

Southern New Hampshire will enter the Northeast-10 Conference postseason as the sixth seed, and will travel to play the number three seed on Saturday, February 26.
