WALTHAM, Mass. – The Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team dealt defending Northeast-10 Conference champion Bentley University its first league loss of the season, as the Penmen defeated the Falcons 6-3 Sunday afternoon. SNHU, which was ranked seventh in this week's NCAA Division II East Region rankings, is now 8-5 and 8-1 in the NE-10, while the Falcons, who are ranked third in the region, are 7-7 and 7-1 in the league.
The SNHU victory snapped Bentley's 20-match NE-10 regular season win streak dating back to the 2008-09 season. It marked the first-ever win over the Falcons in men's tennis for the Penmen in 10 tries, and with the win, Southern New Hampshire set a school record for Northeast-10 victories in a season with eight.
The Penmen opened the match by sweeping all three doubles matches. Juan Arango-Campo (Armenia Quindio, Colombia) and Alex Mukdaprakorn (Hartford, Conn.) were 8-5 winners at No. 1, while Mitchell Dobek (Westfield, Mass.) and Jared Wright (Norwell, Mass.) were 8-2 winners at No. 2. At third doubles, Tim Hamilton (Hampton, N.H.) and John Niland (Cheshire, Conn.) were 9-8 (7-5) winners.
In singles, Arango-Campo posted a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles, while Mukdaprakorn was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at third singles. Niland battled at sixth singles for a 9-8, 9-8 win, as he took both tiebreakers by 7-4 and 7-5 scores.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Wednesday when it travels to Assumption College for a 3:30 match.
