MANCHESTER, N.H.—Ariel Teixeira (Warren, R.I.) tallied a goal in the 60th minute of the game to lead the Southern New Hampshire University Penmen to a 1-0 win over the visiting Skyhawks of Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference action on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Penmen improve to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in NE-10 action, while the Skyhawks fall to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in league play.
After a scoreless first half, Teixeira won the ball from the defender in the 60th minute and fired the shot from outside the 18-yard box to rocket the ball to the upper left corner past Stonehill goalkeeper Sara Hickey.
Stonehill would have a good opportunity to tie the ball with just over 13 minutes remaining in the game when Caitlin Martell collected a rebound while Penmen goalkeeper Maggie Weldon (Manchester, N.H.) was tangled up on the ground with a Stonehill player. Martell's shot would fly just above the crossbar.
Weldon made five saves en route to the shutout victory for Southern New Hamsphire, while Hickey stopped three saves in the loss. The Skyhawks outshot the Penmen 13-9 on the afternoon.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action on Friday when it travels to Southern Connecticut State University for a 7:00 p.m. Northeast-10 Conference matchup.
