Box Score HOOKSETT, N.H.—The Southern New Hampshire University men's ice hockey team dropped a 5-3 decision to Stonehill College on Saturday evening in Northeast-10 Conference action. With the loss, the Penmen fall to 1-19-1 overall and 0-10-0 in NE-10 play, while the loss boosts the visiting Skyhawks to 7-11-2 overall and 4-3-1 in league play.
The Skyhawks tallied the first two goals of the game in the first period as Sean McNeil connected 6:52 into the game and J.J Sabin scored 17 seconds later to give Stonehill the 2-0 lead entering the second period. Tim Mathews, J.B. Sarra, and McNeil netted first-period assists.
Steven Berry (Ashburn, Va.) would notch his third goal of the season just 2:19 into the second frame on assists by Craig Carbonneau (Medford, Mass.) and Casey Goll (Winthrop, Mass.) to bring the score to 2-1. Matt Doherty would bring Stonehill's lead back to two goals at the 4:01 mark to round out the scoring for the second period.
Fabio Cuetara would notch the eventual game-winning goal 9:47 into the final period on an assist by Stephen Balsamo to give the Skyhawks the 4-1 advantage, but SNHU would answer with back-to-back goals by Carbonneau and Brian Troy (Nashua, N.H.) at the 13:36 and 16:19 marks, respectively, to bring the score to 4-3.
SNHU pulled goaltender Tyler Holske (Attleboro, Mass.) with 1:01 remaining in the period to skate the extra offensive player in search of the game-tying goal, but Stonehill's Pat Greene would intercept a Penmen pass and shoot a deep shot into the Penmen's empty net with 10 seconds left in the game to finalize the 5-3 win.
Holske totaled 16 saves in net for the Penmen, while Stonehill goaltender Chris Tasiopoulos recorded 29 saves for the Skyhawks.
The Penmen finished 2-for-6 on the power play, while the Skyhawks were 0-for-1 with the extra man advantage.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action next Saturday when they travel to face Franklin Pierce in the final NE-10 matchup of the season. The puck is slated to drop at 7:30 p.m.
