MANCHESTER, N.H. – Second-seeded Queens (N.Y.) College advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championship with a 5-0 win over No. 7 seed Southern New Hampshire University Monday afternoon at the Derryfield School. The Knights improve to 19-3 with the victory, while the Penmen see their season come to a close at 11-10.
Queens will face University of the District of Columbia in Tuesday's second round. Due to the forecast of inclement weather, that match has been moved indoors to the Nashua Swim and Tennis Club, and will start at 11:30 am. The Firebirds were 5-1 winners over New York Institute of Technology in Monday's first match.
Southern New Hampshire led in two of the four unfinished singles matches. Mitch Dobek (Westfield, Mass.) captured the first set 6-3 at No. 1 singles from Attila Toth, the No. 15-ranked singles player in Division II, before trailing 5-0 in the second set. Mike Wallace (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) was a 6-1 winner in the first set at No. 3 singles against Andre Pellegrino and trailed 2-1 in the second set when play was stopped.
Southern New Hampshire was making its second straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
