Box Score ALBANY, N.Y. – Southern New Hampshire University and defending national champion and top-ranked Saint Rose battled to a 1-1 double-overtime tie in Northeast-10 women's soccer Saturday afternoon at Plumeri Field. The Penmen, who played in their third overtime game of the season, now stand 4-1-1 overall and 2-1-1 in NE-10 play, while the Golden Knights are now 4-0-1 and 2-0-1 in league play.
The deadlock snaps a six-game Saint Rose win streak in the series dating back to 2006, as the two teams also played to a 1-1 draw in 2005.
After a scoreless first half, Saint Rose took a 1-0 lead just under 10 minutes into the second frame as Carmelina Puopolo scored off a feed from Kelly Johnson. Junior Bethi Ledoux (Westborough, Mass.) tied the game in the 60th minute when her shot from 30 yards out snuck in just under the crossbar.
The Golden Knights had the run of play in the second half and the first overtime session, outshooting Southern New Hampshire 14-3, but the Penmen put a flurry of shots on the Saint Rose goal late in the second extra session. Saint Rose keeper Jessica Gerski stopped shots on target by Kaleigh Roberge (Manchester, N.H.) and Morgan Branco (Norton, Mass.) midway through the second overtime, while Roberge lofted an attempt with nine seconds remaining in the game that glanced off the crossbar.
Maggie Weldon (Manchester, N.H.) made seven saves for Southern New Hampshire to preserve the tie while Gerski finished with two saves. Saint Rose outshot the Penmen 20-10 and generated an 11-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Southern New Hampshire returns home Tuesday night when it hosts Merrimack College in a 7:00 Northeast-10 contest at Larkin Field.
