MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Southern New Hampshire University hockey team defeated Assumption College by a score of 3-2 Saturday evening in Northeast-10 Conference play. The win marks the teams sixth in a row, and improves its record to 6-1-0 overall, and 2-1-0 in league play. Assumption falls to 1-4-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the conference.
After a scoreless first period, both teams traded goals in the second. Assumption struck first early on to take a 1-0 lead. Nick Mattiello scored from Ryan Gomez at the 2:23 mark for his second goal on the season. Jay Sylvia (Acushnet, Mass.) answered minutes later on a Penmen power play off a Casey Goll (Winthrop, Mass.) deflection to tie the game up at one goal apiece.
SNHU took its first lead of the game early in the third period on a Dane Caracino (Belmont, Mass.) goal just 1:37 in, but the Hounds quickly answered just 18 seconds later to tie it up again at 2-2. Steven Berry (Ashburn, Va.) netted the game winner at 10:16 from Sylvia and Jim Gabrione (Boca Raton, Fla.), and SNHU was able to fend off 10 Greyhounds' shots in the period to hold onto the win.
Tyler Holske (Attleboro, Mass.) saved 26 shots in net for the Penmen to improve his record to 4-1-0, while Bobby Bowden recorded 39 saves for Assumption.
The Penmen return to action Tuesday, November 26 when they travel to Suffolk University for a non-conference game at 5:40 p.m.
