Late Run for Hockey Not Enough, Ties Nichols 5-5

Box Score

BURRILLVILLE, R.I. – The Southern New Hampshire University hockey team tied by a score of 5-5 to Nichols College in non-conference action Wednesday night. The Penmen improve to 7-3-1 overall, while the Bison are now 6-1-1.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first period, the Penmen fought back to score four consecutive goals, including three in the third period.

Rick Batenburg and Paul Prescott scored the first two goals of the game for the Bison in the first period to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage heading into the second frame.

Scoreless through one-and-a-half periods, the Penmen got on the board on a Joe Collins (Mansfield, Mass.) power play goal from Casey Goll (Winthrop, Mass.) at the 12:38 mark in the second period to cut the deficit to one. However, the Bisons quickly answered with two goals in two minutes, as Sean Swansen and Tyler Beasley notched scores to boost the lead to 4-1. But with less than five minutes to play in the second, Jim O'Connor (Arlington, Mass.) sparked the four-goal tear, and netted his first goal of the season to cut the Bison lead to two-goals heading into the third.

The Penmen continued to roll in the third period as they tied the game on a pair of goals to make it 4-4. Jim Gabrione (Boca Raton, Fla.) scored at the 8:37 mark from Sean McTiernan (Grayson, Ga.) to cut the lead to one, and Anthony Laperriere (Winchendon, Mass.) scored the equalizer just minutes later from Steven Berry (Ashburn, Va.).  John Humphrey (Charlestown, Mass.) then gave SNHU its first lead of the game on a power play goal from Laperriere with 4:52 left to play in the period to give SNHU a 5-4 advantage over the Bison. However, with an extra attacker and 12 seconds remaining in the period, Nichols was able to score once again to tie the game at 5-5 and send it into overtime.

Despite outshooting Nichols in overtime 4-2, the Penmen could not convert any of their shots to scores, resulting in a tie.

Tyler Holske (Attleboro, Mass.) recorded 29 saves for the Penmen in the win, while Larson totaled 30 for Nichols in goal.

The Penmen return to action on Saturday, December 7 when they travel to Western New England for a 4:40 non-conference game.
