SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team was defeated by a score of 5-3 to Western New England University (WNEU) Saturday evening in non-conference play. The Penmen are now 7-4-1, while the Golden Bears improve to 7-3-0.
After a scoreless first period, the Penmen were able to get on the board twice in the second to take a 2-0 lead. Steven Berry (Ashburn, Va.) scored the first goal of the game, and his fifth on the season, halfway through the second frame to give the Penmen a 1-0 lead. Freshman Jay Sylvia (Acushnet, Mass.) followed Berry's goal with his fourth on the season with under three minutes left in the period to put SNHU up 2-0.
The Golden Bears answered in the third period with five goals. WNEU scored four consecutive goals to start the period, and to give the hosts a 4-2 advantage. However, Jim Gabrione (Boca Raton, Fla.) broke up the scoring with his second goal on the season to cut the lead to one, but the Golden Bears scored once more at the 17:59 mark to take the win.
Tyler Holske (Attleboro, Mass.) recorded 31 saves in the loss, while Sorenson stopped 30 shots for WNEU in net.
The Penmen return to action after the holiday on January 4 when they take on Tufts in the Codfish Bowl for a 4:00 p.m. game.
