MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Southern New Hampshire men's tennis team defeated American Int'l College Wednesday evening by a score of 5-1 in the first round of the Northeast-10 Championship. The Penmen improve to 13-7 overall and 8-2 in the conference while the Yellow Jackets finish their season at 7-6 and 4-6 in league play.
With the win, the Penmen will advance to their fourth straight Northeast-10 Championship semi-final appearance. After taking a 2-1 lead in doubles play, the Penmen continued to win the next three singles matches in order to secure the win.
The No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams prevailed for SNHU as Juan Arango-Campo (Armenia Quindio, Colombia) and Evan Eaton (Winchester, Mass.) defeated Cass Shwab and Jakub Simicek by a score of 8-2 in second doubles. In third doubles, Alex Mukdaprakorn (Hartford, Conn.) and Tim Hamilton (Bedford, N.H.) beat Jason Popek and Chandler long by a score of 8-1. Mitch Dobek (Westfield, Mass.) and Mike Wallace (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) fell to Thijs Bik and Kenzo Kauffmann 9-7.
In singles play, Arango-Campo, Wallace, and Mukdaprakorn earned the three Penmen points in order for SNHU to advance. Arango-Campo defeated Bik by scores of 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, while Wallace prevailed over Kauffmann by a score of 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3. Mukdaprakorn contributed to the win with a 6-1, 6-3 defeat over Simicek at fourth singles.
The Penmen advance to the NE-10 semi-final round on Friday, April 19 at Bentley University for a 2:00 p.m. start. If need be, the indoor time of the match is set for 10:00 a.m.
