MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Southern New Hampshire men's tennis team was defeated by Merrimack College Saturday evening by a score of 5-4 in Northeast-10 Conference action. Both regionally ranked teams were undefeated in league play headed into the match. The Penmen are now 10-5 overall and 5-1 in the conference, while the Warriors improve to 7-4 and 5-0 in the NE-10.
After leading the Warriors in doubles play by a score of 2-1, Merrimack won four out of six singles matches to defeat the Penmen.
Mitch Dobek (Westfield, Mass.) and Mike Wallace (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) defeated Matt Lipinski and Miguel Belfort at No. 1 doubles by a score of 8-5, and Juan Arango-Campo (Armenia Quindio, Colombia) teamed up with Evan Eaton (Winchester, Mass.) to prevail in No. 2 play over Vince Bellino and Chris Barnhart by a score of 8-6.
Dobek and Arango-Campo earned the two lone Penmen wins in singles play while Dobek beat his opponent by a score of 6-2, 6-4 at first singles, and Arango-Campo defeated Lipinski by a score of 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2. After losing his first set, Wallace battled back to win the second one to bring the match to a tiebreaker set, but could not hold onto the win as he lost 6-4, 4-6, and 6-2 to Barnhart.
The Penmen return to action Wednesday, April 10 when they travel to the University of Connecticut for a 3:00 p.m. non-conference match.
