Box Score BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – A goal at the 10-minute mark by Julia Weidenmark proved to be the difference as the University of Bridgeport edged Southern New Hampshire University 1-0 in women's soccer action Wednesday evening at Knights Field. The Purple Knights upped their record to 2-1 on the season, while the Penmen suffered their first loss of the season and also stand 2-1 overall.
The game's lone goal came on a corner exactly 10 minutes into the contest as Weidenmark scored on the corner kick by Tabe Rauschenberger, her first goal of the season. The goal broke up a string of six straight shutouts posted by Southern New Hampshire dating back to last season, while it was the first goal surrendered by Penmen keeper Samantha Whittier (Sutton, Mass.) since October 27 of last season, a string of 635:49 of scoreless action.
Bridgeport keeper Julia Hansson made a pair of saves en route to the shutout for the hosts, while Whittier finished with three saves. The Purple Knights held a 12-6 shot advantage, including outshooting the guests 8-1 in the opening 45 minutes.
Southern New Hampshire opens Northeast-10 play Saturday when it travels to Adelphi University for a rematch of last season's NE-10 championship game, won by the Penmen by a 1-0 score. That game is slated for a 4:00 start. The SNHU home opener is set for Wednesday, September 18, a 4:00 non-conference date against Queens (N.Y.) College.
