Stonehill Skates Past Penmen, 4-2

Box Score

FOXBORO, Mass. – The Southern New Hampshire ice hockey team dropped a 4-2 decision to Stonehill College Saturday evening in Northeast-10 Conference play. The Penmen are now 12-6-1 overall, and 4-2-0 in the conference, while Stonehill improves to 10-9-0 and stays undefeated in the league with a 6-0-0 record.

The Penmen got on the board early when Jim Gabrione (Boca Raton, Fla.) scored the first goal of the game just 3:34 into the first period to give SNHU a 1-0 lead. The Penmen held its one-goal advantage for the majority of the frame, but Stonehill was able to tie the game up at 1-1 when Thomas DePoalo scored on a power play with 5:01 left to play.

The Skyhawks opened the second period with back-to-back power play goals. An early tally just 2:45 in gave them a 2-1 lead, and another man-up score at the 12:38 mark boosted the lead to two goals. Sean McTiernan (Grayson, Ga.) broke up the hosts scoring for SNHU with his first goal of the season from John Humphrey (Charlestown, Mass.), and to cut the lead back to one heading into the final period.

SNHU did not allow Stonehill to build on its 3-2 lead for the majority of the third period, and with one minute left, pulled goalie Tyler Holske (Attleboro, Mass.) for the extra skater advantage. However, the Skyhawks capitalized on the empty net opportunity, and scored with 37 seconds remaining to secure the win at 4-2.

Holske saved 25 shots for SNHU, while Chris Tasiopoulos turned away 20 Penmen shots en route to the win.

The Penmen return to action next Saturday, February 1, when they return home to host Assumption College in a league game at 7:30 p.m.
