Box Score EASTON, Mass. — The Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team fell on the road to Stonehill College in the Northeast-10 Conference action by a final score of 6-3. The Penmen move to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in league play, while the Skyhawks improve to 2-2 with a 2-0 mark within the NE-10.
After falling behind 2-0 within the first five minutes of the first, Southern New Hampshire climbed back into the game with a pair of goals late in the opening frame. With just under eight minutes left in the period, sophomore Jay Sylvia (Acushnet, Mass.) collected his second goal of the season with a power play tally that was set up by junior Joe Collins (Mansfield, Mass.) and freshman Kevin Lorcher (Rouen, France). Senior John Humphrey (Charlestown, Mass.) knotted the score at two with 4:41 to play before intermission when he found the back of the net for the first time this season with help from junior Jim O'Connor (Arlington, Mass.).
The second period saw the Skyhawks regain their two-goal lead with goals from Nate Soter and Kevin Aufiero less than 10 minutes in. The Penmen again fought back, closing the gap to a single goal with 1:54 to go in period, as junior Jim Gabrione (Boca Raton, Fla.) trimmed the deficit to 4-3 when picked up his first goal of the season off a feed from Sylvia and Collins. In the third, Stonehill would booked the period with single goals in the first five minutes and final five minutes for the 6-3 victory.
Sylvia led Southern New Hampshire with a goal and an assist, while Collins also picked up two points on a pair of assists. Freshman Matthew MacInnis (Arlington, Texas) stopped 35 shots in the setback, while his counterpart, Chris Tasiopoulos recorded 17 saves.
The Penmen return to action on Saturday when they travel to Assumption College for 6:35 p.m. face-off with the Greyhounds. Stonehill also resumes its schedule on Saturday when it plays host to Franklin Pierce University.
