Gabrione Goal Lifts Ice Hockey to Overtime Win Against Assumption

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. — Junior Jim Gabrione (Boca Raton, Fla.) scored with 2.1 seconds remaining in overtime to propel the Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team to a 4-3 victory over Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday night. The Penmen improve to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in conference play, while the Greyhounds fall to 1-5 and 1-3 in the NE-10.

With 11 seconds left in the extra session, junior Joe Collins (Mansfield, Mass.) won a defensive zone face-off back to senior Bryan Wright (Reading, Mass.). Wright gathered the puck in the corner and wheeled it around the boards, where it bounced past an Assumption defender and onto the stick of a streaking Gabrione. The junior captain then went in 2-on-1 with Collins before firing a shot that beat Greyhound netminder Nick Commesso for his second goal of the season.

After a scoreless first, the two teams erupted for five second period goals. Assumption opened up the second stanza with a pair of goals within the first five minutes, as Ryan Gomez and Trevor Plante both cashed in on powerplay opportunities to make it 2-0.

With 10:09 left to play, Collins buried a wrist shot from the top of the circle high and to the glove side for his second of the year to cut the deficit in half. Less than two minutes later, senior Dane Caracino (Belmont, Mass.) knotted the score at two when he sent a low shot through traffic that snuck through Commesso's five-hole off an assist from sophomore Jay Sylvia (Acushnet, Mass.).

Wright put the Penmen ahead with 5:34 left before intermission when he tallied a powerplay goal of his own. After senior John Humphrey's (Charlestown, Mass.) initial shot was stopped, Wright stepped down from the point and one-timed the rebound home to give Southern New Hampshire a 3-2 lead. In the third, Brandon Bete scored the game-tying goal with less than three minutes left in regulation to set the stage for Gabrione's heroics.

Collins, Wright and Gabrione each notched a goal and an assist to lead the Penmen offense, while Sylvia also picked up a pair of points with two assists. Bete was the offensive standout for the Greyhounds as he collected a goal and dished out an assist in the setback. Junior David Letarte (Salem, Mass.) earned his second victory of the season between the pipes for Southern New Hampshire after turning aside 28 shots, while Commesso made 35 saves in the losing effort for Assumption.

The Penmen held a 39-31 edge in shots and also enjoyed a 37-29 advantage in face-offs. The teams combined for 16 penalties, with Southern New Hampshire being whistled for seven and Assumption being assessed nine. The Penmen finished the night 2-for-9 on the man advantage, while the Greyhounds were 2-for-4.
