Box Score HOOKSETT, N.H. – Jay Sylvia (Acushnet, Mass.) scored twice as Southern New Hampshire University posted a 5-1 win over Assumption College Saturday night in Northeast-10 ice hockey at the Ice Den. The Penmen, who have won five of six, improve to 13-6-1 and 5-2 in the NE-10, and picked up two more points with the series victory. The Greyhounds are now 3-15-2 and 0-8-1 in the league.
Besides Sylvia, Steven Berry (Ashburn, Va.), Jim O'Connor (Arlington, Mass.) and Zach Lubinski (Hudson, N.H.) scored, with Lubinski recording a goal and an assist. Jim Gabrione (Boca Raton, Fla.) had four assists on the evening for SNHU.
Southern New Hampshire staked itself to a 2-0 lead after one period. On a power play 4:51 into the contest, Berry scored his 10th goal of the season, with sophomore Joe Collins (Mansfield, Mass.) and Gabrione assisting. The Penmen doubled the lead 4:12 before the first intermission when freshman Sylvia scored his seventh goal of the season, with Gabrione and Lubinski assisting.
O'Connor made it a 3-0 game 2:06 into the second period when he scored on a breakaway, with Connor Audycki (Bellevue, Wash.) and Kyle O'Connell (Bridgewater, Mass.) assisting. 3:21 later, Lubinski scored his fourth goal of the season to make it 4-0, with Nick Riccio (Wilmington, Mass.) and Gabrione assisting.
Sylvia scored again 33 seconds into the third period on a power play to give the hosts a 5-0 advantage. Nick Mattiello scored at the 5:04 mark of the third period on a power play for Assumption to spoil the shutout bid.
Tyler Holske (Attleboro, Mass.) made 19 saves in goal for the Penmen, while Assumption counterpart Nick Commesso made 32 stops as SNHU outshot the Greyhounds 37-20. Southern New Hampshire was 2-5 on the power play while Assumption was 1-6 with the man advantage.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Tuesday night when it travels to Saint Anselm College for a 7:00 Northeast-10 contest at Sullivan Arena. The final home game of the regular season is set for Saturday, February 8 against Stonehill College. That game is slated for a 7:30 faceoff.
