Stonehill Strikes Late to Defeat SNHU by a Score of 2-1

Box Score

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Stonehill's Richard Harris scored the game-winning goal with 24 seconds left in the third period to defeat Southern New Hampshire University by a score of 2-1 in a Northeast-10 Conference ice hockey matchup Saturday evening at the Ice Den. The Penmen are now 13-8-1 overall, and 5-4 in league play, while the Skyhawks remain unbeaten in the conference with a 9-0 record, and improve to 14-9-0 overall.

After a scoreless first period, Stonehill got on the board first in the second period when Thomas Jenkins netted his fifth goal of the year five minutes in to take a 1-0 lead. SNHU was unable to find an answer in the second, and took the one-goal deficit into the third period.

The Skyhawks' lead did not last long in the final period as John Humphrey (Arlington, Mass.) came up with the equalizer early at the 3:10 mark for his sixth goal on the season. Jay Sylvia (Acushnet, Mass.) and Jim Gabrione (Boca Raton, Fla.) assisted on the goal to tie the game up at 1-1. The game seemed to be headed into an overtime period as both teams remained tied up with under one-minute to play. However, with 24 seconds, Harris was able to find the net with the help of Dan Graham and Nate Soter, and Stonehill took a 2-1 lead. The Penmen pulled goalie Tyler Holske (Attleboro, Mass.) for an extra skater, but time expired before SNHU could get any promising looks on net.

Holske saved 22 shots in 59:38 of work in goal, while Chris Tasiopoulos turned away 37 for Stonehill. SNHU outshot the Skyhawks in every period but the last, and overall 38-24.

The Penmen return to action when they travel to Assumption College for a league game on Thursday, February 13 at 7:35 p.m.
