Freshman Miranda Peloquin (Greenville, R.I.) buried her second goal of the season with 3:44 left to play in overtime to lift Southern New Hampshire University to a 1-0 women's soccer victory against Saint Michael's College on Tuesday night. The Penmen improve to 9-3-2 overall and 7-2-2 in the Northeast-10, while the Purple Knights fall to 1-12-1 and 0-11 in league play.
After an initial Southern New Hampshire shot attempt was blocked, the Saint Michael's defense was unable to clear the ball out of the box. Peloquin gathered the loose ball behind the Purple Knights' back line and deposited a shot to the right side of the goal to give the Penmen the win.
Southern New Hampshire had a pair of opportunities late in the game to take the lead, but Saint Michael's goalkeeper Megan LeCours was up to the task and kept the game scoreless through 90 minutes of play. With 11:22 to go in regulation, sophomore Trisha Luis (Lowell, Mass.) broke free and found herself one-on-one with LeCours at the top of the box. The Purple Knights' netminder charged out to cut down the angle and forced Luis' shot to roll wide of the cage. After the visitors were whistled for a hand-ball in the penalty area at 86:05, LeCours stopped senior Gabby Cappello (Andover, Mass.) on a penalty kick to keep the score deadlocked at zero.
Junior Autumn Scanlon (Waltham, Mass.) improved to 5-2 in goal for the Penmen after stopping three shots to earn her third shutout of the season, while LeCours made five saves in the setback.
Notes:
- Southern New Hampshire outshot Saint Michael's 13-8 in the contest and held a 6-3 edge in shots on goal.
- In Northeast-10 games this season, Scanlon is now 4-1 with 28 saves, a .933 save-percentage and a .38 goals against average in 472:12.
- After going scoreless through the first 11 games of her collegiate career, Peloquin now has two goals in her last three games.
