Sophomore goalkeeper Paige Salmon (W. Hempstead, N.Y.) made eight saves, including four in a scoreless first half, but three second-half goals for Adelphi University sank the Southern New Hampshire University women's soccer team, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at Motamed Field in both teams' regular-season finales.
The Penmen garner the No. 4 seed for the Northeast-10 Championship and will host fifth-seeded Merrimack College (11-4-3, 8-4-2 NE-10) on Tuesday, Nov. 3 at Larkin Field. It is the first NE-10 Championship berth for SNHU since the 2012 season. The win catapults Adelphi into the top spot in the league standings and gives them the No. 1 seed.
Following a scoreless first 60 minutes, Adelphi finally broke through at the 60:38 mark when Meaghan Simmonds set up a Laura Gomez goal with a cross from the right flank.
The Panthers doubled their lead in the 76th minute as Kelsey Simpson finished an Olivia Czavar pass with a one-timer that found the back of the net.
Adelphi closed the scoring in the 87th minute as a cross from the right by Christina Dutcher found the foot of Nicole Forte, who scored to make it 3-0.
With the eight saves, Salmon falls to 5-2-2 on the year. Anne Marie Ulliac stopped all three shots she faced for Adelphi, including two in the second stanza.
Notes:
-Adelphi held a 27-3 advantage in shots, as well as a 9-2 margin in corner kicks.
-The loss snaps a four-game unbeaten streak and three-match winning streak for the Penmen.
