Sophomores Ricardo Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal), Xavier Aubron (Herouville, France) and Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal) each won two matches to lead the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team to Tuesday's 6-3 triumph against Stonehill College at the Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex.
Southern New Hampshire grabbed a big advantage early as it swept the three doubles matches from the Skyhawks. Fernandes and classmate Miguel Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) started with an 8-5 No. 1 doubles win before Ricardo Marreiros and Aubron pulled out an 8-6 victory at No. 2. Sophomore Jeremy Reichentahl (Cheshire, Conn.) and freshman Max Georgeff (Toronto, Ontario) polished off the sweep with an 8-2 win in the No. 3 slot.
Ricardo Marreiros, the reigning three-time Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week, stayed hot at No. 1 singles as he recorded a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Thomas Bellio. Brother Miguel Marreiros dropped a tough, 1-6, 6-3, 4-6 decision to Nikolay Lisichenok at No. 2, but Aubron picked him at No. 3 singles with a big 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 triumph. Fernandes was the one to clinch the match with a 6-3, 6-4 W at No. 4 singles over Tom Buckley.
Notes:
-SNHU has won six of its last seven, including six straight against Division II opponents.
-Ricardo Marreiros and Fernandes have captured six straight singles matches against Division II foes, while Aubron has won four straight. Georgeff has racked up seven-in-a-row against DII opponents in doubles play.
-Southern New Hampshire is 10th in the latest Oracle/ITA Division II East Rankings.
-Ricardo Marreiros, Miguel Marreiros and Aubron are all ranked inside the top 20 among singles players in the region at 10th, 12th and 15th, respectively. Ricardo Marreiros and Aubron are the eighth-ranked doubles team in the region.
