Sophomores Ricardo Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) and Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal), along with freshman Max Georgeff (Toronto, Ontario), all won two matches to lead the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team to a 7-2 victory in a crucial regional matchup against Post University on Thursday at the Edgewood Bath & Tennis Club.
Southern New Hampshire squeaked out a No. 1 doubles win as Marreiros and classmate Miguel Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) pulled out a 9-7 victory. Following an 8-5 loss out of the No. 2 slot by sophomores Jeremy Reichentahl (Cheshire, Conn.) and Xavier Aubron (Herouville, France), Fernandes and Georgeff cruised to an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles to give the Penmen a 2-1 edge heading into singles action.
SNHU cruised through singles for the most part, with Ricardo Marreiros setting the tone with a 6-1, 6-2 No. 1 singles victory against Nikola Crvelin, who is ranked 19th in the region. Aubron earned a 6-4, 6-1 win over Peter Fanous at No. 3 singles, while Fernandes clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-0, drubbing of Ludvig Henrikson out of the No. 4 spot.
Georgeff defeated Vladyslav Dyenyezhka, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 5 singles, with Reichentahl cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 win against Ryan Moffat at No. 6 singles.
Notes:
-SNHU has won seven of its last eight, including seven straight against Division II opponents.
-Ricardo Marreiros and Fernandes have captured seven straight singles matches against Division II foes, while Aubron has won five straight. Georgeff has racked up eight-in-a-row against DII opponents in doubles play.
-Southern New Hampshire is 10th in the latest Oracle/ITA Division II East Rankings.
-Ricardo Marreiros, Miguel Marreiros, and Aubron are all ranked inside the top 20 among singles players in the region at 10th, 12th, and 15th, respectively. Ricardo Marreiros and Aubron are the eighth-ranked doubles team in the region.
