Sophomore Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal) continued his hot singles play with a win at No. 4, but the fifth-seeded Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team saw its season draw to a close with a 5-1 loss to fourth-seeded Queens (N.Y.) College in the NCAA Tournament on Monday at the Queens College Tennis Courts.
Fernandes dispatched Roman Laga, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 4 singles, but it was not enough to overcome an early 3-0 hole following doubles play.
Sophomore Miguel Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision at the No. 2 slot to Ryan Frankel and fellow sophomore Ricardo Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) battled against Sharvill Nawghre at No. 1 singles, but fell, 6-1, 6-3.
Notes:
- Sophomore Xavier Aubron (Herouville, France) dropped his first set to Gabriel Mendez at No. 3 singles, 6-1, but had battled back and was tied at 5-all in the second set when the match was clinched.
-Southern New Hampshire was making its fifth NCAA Tournament appearance following its second Northeast-10 Championship.
-SNHU had won 12 of its last 13, including 12 straight against Division II opponents.
-Fernandes has captured 13 straight singles matches against Division II foes.
-Southern New Hampshire sits fifth the latest Oracle/ITA Division II East Rankings, while Queens is fourth.
-Ricardo Marreiros is ranked seventh among singles players in the region, while he and Aubron are the 10th-ranked doubles team in the East.
-The Penmen have their entire roster back next season.
