Juniors Xavier Aubron (Herouville, France) and Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal) went a perfect 4-0 in two matches Saturday as the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team won the Gordon Invitational. The Penmen doubled up host Gordon College, 6-3, in the morning before knocking off Babson College, 7-2, in the afternoon championship match.
In the final against Babson, Southern New Hampshire swept doubles to take a 3-0 lead into singles play. Juniors Ricardo Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) and Miguel Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) doubled up Alberto De Mendiola and Brandon Rosenbluth, 8-4, at No. 1 singles, while freshman Bas Van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands) and Aubron squeaked past Ben Roque and Dan Levitan, 9-7, at No. 2 singles and Fernandes and fellow junior Jeremy Reichentahl (Cheshire, Conn.) took down Connor Chin and Dylan Pace, 8-2, at No. 3 singles.
Fernandes won his No. 2 singles match against Rosenbluth, 6-1, 6-2, while Aubron was victorious against Ben Roque at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 7-5.
Van Biezen was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Pace at No. 5 singles, while Reichentahl rounded out SNHU's singles winners with a 6-1, 6-4 victory against Dom Wysolmerski at No. 6.
In the first round against Gordon, the Penmen jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Aubron and Van Biezen cruised to an 8-1 victory against Jonathan Frink and Peter Godwin at No. 2 doubles. After Gordon tied it, Fernandes and Miguel Marreiros gave SNHU a 2-1 edge heading into singles play with an 8-4 win against Mason Casady and Nate Lookwhy at No. 1 doubles.
Aubron posted a 7-5, 6-2 victory against Frink at No. 4 singles, while Ricardo Marreiros easily handled Casady, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2 singles to expand the lead to 4-1.
With the score 4-2, Fernandes clinched a finals berth with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of Lookwhy at No. 2 singles.
Miguel Marreiros was also victorious at No. 3 singles, beating Mike D'Antuono, 6-3, 6-0.
Notes:
- The Penmen are 3-0 for the first time since the 2013-14 season.
