Junior Trisha Luis (Lowell, Mass.) scored twice and classmate Paige Salmon (W. Hempstead, N.Y.) registered nine saves as the Southern New Hampshire University women's soccer team bounced back from its season-opening loss Friday with a 4-1 victory against Mercy College on Sunday afternoon at Jess Dow Field to close out its time at the Southern Connecticut State University Women's Soccer Classic.
SNHU scored its first goal of 2016 late in the 20th minute when Luis received a feed on the right from junior Abigail Maker (Naples, Maine) and beat Mercy goalkeeper Ashley Price to make it 1-0.
The Penmen picked up another crucial goal with four minutes remaining in the opening half as sophomore Danielle Humphreys (Hebron, Conn.) found the back of the net to double the Southern New Hampshire advantage.
Mercy responded just 30 seconds later, however, with Heidi Serna connecting on a pass to Lauren Calderaro, who scored to slice the Mavericks' deficit in half.
Southern New Hampshire would regain its two-goal advantage after the break off a set piece as Luis collected her second of the game, heading home the corner service from junior Courtney Benson (Hopkinton, N.H.) to make it 3-1 in the 51st minute.
Junior Sydney Crema (Litchfield, N.H.) sealed the win with her goal in the 81st minute off an assist from Maker.
Notes:
-The nine saves for Salmon are a SNHU career best. She stopped 11 shots as a freshman playing for Molloy College in 2014.
-Price turned aside five shots for the Mavericks.
- Mercy outshot Southern New Hampshire, 12-11, and generated more corner opportunities by a 4-1 margin.
The Penmen return to action Wednesday, Sept. 7 (4 p.m.) when they play host to Post University at Larkin for the Penmen Kickoff, which will feature food, swag, games and giveaways.
