Senior Trisha Luis (Lowell, Mass.) scored with just over five minutes left to play in regulation to snap a 1-1 tie and send the Southern New Hampshire University women's soccer team to a 2-1 non-conference win against 23rd-ranked Mercy College on Wednesday at Mercy Field.
With the score even at one a piece, senior Abigail Maker (Naples, Maine) delivered a pass to spring Luis, who took advantage of the breakaway opportunity and sent a shot into the lower left corner of the net to put the Penmen up, 2-1, with just 5:47 on the clock in regulation.
Senior goalkeeper Paige Salmon (W. Hempstead, N.Y.) turned away four of the five shots she faced, while Melissa Torres made eight saves for Mercy.
Southern New Hampshire drew first blood in the 25th minute when a free kick produced a scoring chance that was finished by junior Miranda Peloquin (Greenville, R.I.), who found the back of the net off a rebound from a shot by senior Courtney Benson (Hopkinton, N.H.).
The Penmen maintained the 1-0 advantage until the 61st minute when Jessica Brandt played a through-ball to Heidi Serna, who slotted the ball into the lower right corner of the net to make it 1-1.
Notes:
- The Penmen have lost just once in their last 15 matches (11-1-3).
- Southern New Hampshire is now 16-3-3 in the regular season, dating back to Oct. 15 of last season.
- The Penmen are outscoring their opponents, 30-9, on the season.
- Salmon and the Penmen see their longest shutout streak of the season end at 443:54.
- Southern New Hampshire was outshot for just the third time this season, 14-11, but held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
- SNHU is now outshooting its opponents, 299-135, on the season.
