Junior Ricardo Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) recorded a tiebreak win at No. 2 singles, but the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team opened its Hawaii trip with an 8-1 loss to Brigham Young University-Hawaii on Wednesday at the BYUH Tennis Courts.
Marreiros held a 5-4 lead on Guillermo Ucelay before Ucelay broke serve and jumped in front, 7-6. Marreiros fought back to force the tiebreak and grabbed an early lead before holding off Ucelay for the 9-8 (7-6) victory.
Junior Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal) and freshman Bas van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherland) both made their singles matches close, but fell, 8-5, to Sterling Galli at No. 1 and Simon Gullin at No. 5, respectively.
In doubles play, van Biezen and junior Xavier Aubron (Herouville, France) were edged by Gullin and Ucelay, 8-6, at No. 2.
