Junior Miguel Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) rallied for a three-set victory at No. 3 singles to clinch a 5-4 triumph for the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team against Le Moyne College on Sunday at the YMCA Allard Center.
Tied, 4-4, Marreiros fell behind as he lost the first set of his No. 3 singles match to Hallam Doney, 6-2. Marreiros collected himself and battled back in a big way, winning the next two sets, 6-3 and 6-4, respectively, to lift the Penmen to victory.
Despite an 8-3 win from juniors Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal) and Ricardo Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) against Philip Blythe and Doney at No. 1 doubles, the Penmen found themselves trailing, 2-1, heading into singles play.
An injury to freshman Bas van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherland) in his doubles match forced a re-shuffling of the singles lineup for Southern New Hampshire. The top four for the Penmen held up, with Fernandes dispatching Blythe, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1, Ricardo Marreiros defeating James Gayvert by the same score at No. 2 and junior Xavier Aubron (Herouville, France) pulling out a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 4, which allowed Miguel Marreiros to play the role of hero.
Notes:
-The win snaps a six-match losing streak for the Penmen, who lost to three to nationally-ranked opponents during that stretch.
-SNHU is ranked fourth in the Oracle/ITA East Regional Rankings.
