Men's Tennis Polishes Off Second Consecutive Unbeaten NE10 Slate

Junior Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal) lost just three games in his two matches as the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team edged Bentley University, 5-4, in its regular-season finale Friday at the SNHU Tennis Courts to claim its second straight unblemished Northeast-10 record. 

Fernandes began the day by teaming with classmate Ricardo Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) for an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles against Brendan McCarthy and George Samander. Fellow juniors Miguel Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) and Xavier Aubron (Herouville, France) picked up a big No. 2 doubles victory, edging Chase Rosa and Dylan Granat, 9-7.

Leading, 2-1, heading into singles play, the Penmen moved closer to clinching the match as Fernandes made quick work of McCarthy, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 singles and Ricardo Marreiros toppled Samander, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2. 

SNHU would win the match as Aubron narrowly defeated Rosa, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

Notes:
-The Penmen have now won eight-in-a-row and extend their NE10 winning streak to 19 straight, dating back to Oct. 15, 2015.
-SNHU, which captured its second NE10 Regular-Season Championship with a win at Merrimack on Wednesday, caps off its second consecutive unbeaten NE10 slate after going a perfect 10-0 last season.
-Southern New Hampshire will be the No. 1 seed and have a bye into the semifinal round of the NE10 Championship, which begins Tuesday, April 18.
-SNHU is ranked fourth in the Oracle/ITA East Regional Rankings, while Merrimack is seventh.

The Penmen will await their next opponent for the Northeast-10 Championship semifinal Thursday, April 20 (2 p.m.) at the SNHU Tennis Courts.
