Senior Danielle Humphreys (Hebron, Conn.) tallied three points on a goal and an assist, as the 23rd-ranked Southern New Hampshire University women's soccer team held off the University of Bridgeport, 3-2, Wednesday evening at Penmen Stadium.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

  • Humphreys scored for the second straight contest and continues to lead the team with eight goals.
  • Freshman Dorthea Glorud (Brumunddal, Norway) found the back of the net for the fourth time in the last five games and now has 11 points over the last six matches.
  • Freshman Sydney Carney (Northborough, Mass.) also added a goal – her sixth of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Southern New Hampshire went on top, 1-0, early in the 17th minute when Humphreys chipped a ball from midfield into the Penmen offensive zone, where Glorud ran onto it, carried it into the box and sent a shot inside the left post.
  • SNHU doubled its lead with just under seven minutes remaining in the opening half, as Carney collected a thru-ball from junior Shae Roys (No. Billerica, Mass.) in the box and shot it around the challenging Bridgeport goalkeeper and into the right side of the net.
  • Bridgeport sliced its deficit in half just 54 seconds into the second stanza, as Amanda Ebbesson carried the ball into the top of the box and dished it off to the right for Maegen Doyle, who blasted a shot past a diving freshman goalkeeper Hannah Rose (Waterloo, Ontario) and inside the far left post.
  • Humphreys put the Penmen back up by two in the 58th minute. Glorud delivered a cross from the right side of the box toward the left post, with Humphreys' initial shot being stopped by Bridgeport goalkeeper Jennifer Wendelius, but she buried the follow-up to make it 3-1.
  • The Purple Knights pulled back within one in the 77th minute off a corner when Karin Oberg served a ball into the box, where Andrea Basilicato headed it inside the near left post.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Rose made five saves, while Wendelius turned aside nine shots for the Purple Knights.
  • Shots were even at 16 apiece.
  • Bridgeport owned a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.

NOTES

  • SNHU, which is ranked 23rd in the United Soccer Coaches Division II Poll, is unbeaten in 11 of its last 12, including 10 straight.
  • Bridgeport, which had also entered the match unbeaten in nine straight, sees its seven-game win streak come to an end.
  • Southern New Hampshire can still claim an NE10 Regular Season Championship and the No. 1 seed after Franklin Pierce University played to a scoreless tie at Saint Michael's College on Wednesday. The Ravens, who remain atop the NE10 standings, one point ahead of the Penmen, can still clinch a regular season title and the top seed with a win Saturday at Southern Connecticut State University. A loss or another tie will leave the door open for the Penmen, who will need a win Saturday at the College of Saint Rose.
  • The Penmen are now 32-8-6 (.761) over their last 46 matches dating back to the 2016 campaign.
  • SNHU also improves to 16-1-2 (.895) at home since the end of the 2016 season.

UP NEXT

  • The Penmen are back in action Saturday, Oct. 27 (2 p.m.) when they take on Saint Rose.
  • SNHU will host a Northeast-10 Championship quarterfinal match Tuesday, Oct. 30 (4 p.m.) at Penmen Stadium.
