Ice Hockey Drops Bryn Athyn, 4-2, for First Win of 2018-19

Senior Kurt Gutting (Weymouth, Mass.) registered 29 saves, including 20 over the final two periods of action Saturday to backstop the Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team to its first win of the 2018-19 season, a 4-2 triumph over Bryn Athyn College at the Revolution Ice Gardens in Warminster, Pennsylvania.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

  • Sophomore Kyle Galloway (Sugar Hill, Ga.) tallied what proved to be the game-winning goal midway through the second period.
  • Freshmen Andy Somerville (Medford, Mass.) and Charlie Davis (Milton, Mass.) each scored their first career goals in the victory.
  • Senior Joseph Berardi (Burlington, Mass.) collected his second marker of the season, as four different Penmen found the back of the net.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Somerville staked Southern New Hampshire to a 1-0 lead less than seven minutes into the opening stanza, as he cashed in a feed from freshman Dominic DiMambro (Troy, Mich.) and sophomore Griffin Connor (Manchester, N.H.) at 6:40.
  • Davis doubled the Penmen advantage 1:39 into the second with his first in an SNHU sweater, and Galloway extended the advantage to three goals when he netted his second with help from freshman Jake Cox (Columbus, Ga.) at 7:22.
  • Bryn Athyn responded late in the second with back-to-back goals within the span of 91 seconds. Devon Becker's powerplay marker at 14:15 trimmed the Penmen lead to a pair before Tanner Schroeder made it a one-goal game with 4:14 left in the second.
  • Berardi put the game away 3:31 into the third when freshman Travis Quigley (North Babylon, N.Y.) set him up for his second of the season to cap the game's scoring.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • The Lions outshot the Penmen, 31-28, for the duration of the contest. SNHU outshot Bryn Athyn, 12-9, in the opening frame before the hosts flipped a 21-16 edge over the final 40 minutes.
  • SNHU was whistled for 14 minutes worth of penalties on seven infractions while the Lions were assessed two minor penalties for four minutes worth of penance.
  • Southern New Hampshire was victorious in 36-of-71 trips to the faceoff dot and killed off six of seven man-down chances.

NOTES

  • DiMambro was making his first collegiate appearance
  • Galloway's goal was the sixth of his career, while Berardi's was his 11th.
