Graduate student Xavier Aubron (Herouville, France) and sophomore Bas van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands) each collected a pair of wins, but the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team was narrowly beaten out by Chestnut Hill College, 5-4, Saturday at the YMCA Allard Center of Goffstown.
Aubron and van Biezen staked Southern New Hampshire to a 1-0 lead with an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles against Felix Andre and Antoine Gautier. After Lucas Bocaletto and Pedro Regalin knotted the match by edging seniors Ricardo Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) and Miguel Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal), 9-7, at No. 1 doubles, graduate student Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal) and senior Jeremy Reichentahl (Cheshire, Conn.) pulled out a 9-8 (9-7) win over Jesus Darias and Adam Gavin at No. 3 to send the Penmen into singles play with a 2-1 lead.
Aubron then extended the advantage to 3-1, beginning singles play with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph against Bocaletto at No. 4. The Griffins then captured three straight victories at Nos. 3, 2 and 1, respectively, to go in front, 4-3. The back-breaker was Darias' No. 2 win over Ricardo Marreiros, battling back for a 3-6, 7-6 (11-9), 6-3 victory. Fernandes' No. 1 flight also went to three sets, but it was Andre posting the 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win.
Gavin then clinched it for the visitors at No. 6, rolling to a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Reichentahl before van Biezen tallied a 6-1, 4-6, 10-7 win against Regalin at No. 5.
Notes:
-The Penmen are ranked No. 4 in the ITA Division II East Regional Rankings, while the Griffins are fifth.
