The Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team played close to flawless tennis Thursday, as it downed Adelphi University, 8-1, at the YMCA Allard Center of Goffstown.
Southern New Hampshire set the tone in doubles, as seniors Ricardo Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) and Miguel Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) doubled up Ilya Kalabukhau and Luke Attride-Stirling, 8-4, at No. 2 to begin it. Senior Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal) and senior Jeremy Reichentahl (Cheshire, Conn.) then breezed to an 8-2 victory against David Robres de Veciana and Connor Dove at No. 3, before graduate student Xavier Aubron (Herouville, France) and sophomore Bas van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands) made it 3-0 with an 8-5 triumph over Matteo Cannavera and Sabin Adrian Saveluc at No. 1.
The Penmen kept it going into singles play, with Miguel Marreiros upending Robres de Veciana, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3 before Ricardo Marreiros clinched the match by defeating Saveluc, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Aubron pulled out a 7-6 (5-3), 6-2 win at No. 4 against Kalabukhau, with Fernandes toppling Cannavera at the top flight, 6-2, 7-5, in a battle of the last two NE10 Players of the Year.
van Biezen did not drop at game to Attride-Stirling at No. 5, winning, 6-0, 6-0. Reichentahl lost in a marathon at No. 6 to wrap up the match against Dove, falling, 6-0, 1-6, 14-12.
Notes:
-Southern New Hampshire extends its NE10 winning streak, including the postseason, to 27.
-van Biezen, who is 12-2 on the season in singles play, has won 10 of 11, including six straight.
-Cannavera was both the 2014-15 and 2015-16 NE10 Vern Cox Men's Tennis Player of the Year, while Fernandes earned the award last season.
-The Penmen are ranked No. 4 in the ITA Division II East Regional Rankings.
