Senior Ricardo Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) was part of a near total domination of singles play, as he clinched the match at No. 2, to lead the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team to a 9-0 victory over Assumption College on Wednesday afternoon at the SNHU Tennis Courts at Penmen Stadium.
Seniors Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal.) and Jeremy Reichentahl (Cheshire, Conn.) set the tone early, sweeping past Jameson Keppeler and Luke Whitehouse, 8-0, at No. 3 doubles. Marreiros and classmate Miguel Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) then breezed past Danny Waung and Reb Mariano, 8-2, at No. 2, before sophomore Bas van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands) and graduate student Xavier Aubron (Herouville, France) posted an 8-5 win over Ryan Foster and Max Francis at No. 1 to put the Penmen up, 3-0, in the match.
Aubron made quick work of Mariano at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-0, before Ricardo Marreiros came up with the clincher at No. 2, defeating Francis, 6-1, 6-2. Miguel Marreiros and Fernandes posted wins by the same score against Waung at No. 3 and Foster at No. 1, respectively.
van Biezen then downed Keppeler, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 5, before junior Faizan Khalid (Manchester, N.H.) recorded his first career singles win with a 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 10-2 triumph over Whitehouse at No. 6.
Notes:
-Southern New Hampshire, which has now won seven-in-a-row, extends its NE10 winning streak, including the postseason, to 30.
-van Biezen, who is 18-2 on the season in singles play, has won 16 of 17, including 12 straight.
-Fernandes and Aubron have won seven consecutive singles matches.
-Fernandes, Ricardo Marreiros, Miguel Marreiros, Aubron and van Biezen are all 7-0 in NE10 singles play this season.
-The Penmen are ranked No. 4 in the ITA Division II East Regional Rankings.
