Men's Tennis Downs Bentley, 6-3, to Move One Step Closer to Regular Season Title

Seniors Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal) and sophomore Bas van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands) each won a pair of matches to lead the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team to a 6-3 triumph over Bentley University on Thursday.

Graduate student Xavier Aubron (Herouville, France) and van Biezen doubled-up Brendan McCarthy and George Samander, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles, with senior Jeremy Reichentahl (Cheshire, Conn.) and Fernandes defeating Connor Aulson and Dylan Granat by the same score at No. 3. Bentley salvaged a win at No. 2, as Michael Fuca and Brett Gilman pulled out a 9-8 (7-2) victory against seniors Ricardo Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) and Miguel Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal).

Fernandes then opened singles play with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over McCarthy at No. 1, before van Biezen did his part by defeating Fuca, 6-2, 6-0, to push Bentley to the brink. Miguel Marreiros would be the one to finish it with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Granat at No. 3.

After Bentley victories at No. 6 and No. 4, Ricardo Marreiros pulled out a 6-7 (1-7), 6-3, 10-5 marathon win at No. 2 against Samander.

Notes:
-Southern New Hampshire, which has now won eight-in-a-row, extends its NE10 winning streak, including the postseason, to 31.
-van Biezen, who is 19-2 on the season in singles play, has won 17 of 18, including 13 straight.
-Fernandes has won eight consecutive singles matches, while Aubron had his streak snapped at seven.
-Fernandes, Ricardo Marreiros, Miguel Marreiros, and van Biezen are all 8-0 in NE10 singles play this season.
-The Penmen are ranked No. 4 in the ITA Division II East Regional Rankings, while the Falcons are No. 9.

Up Next:
The Penmen can earn their third straight Northeast-10 Regular-Season Championship on Saturday, April 14 (1 p.m.) when they play host to Merrimack College in the regular-season finale.
