Men's Ice Hockey Takes Down Saint Michael's 3-1 Saturday

Junior DJ Goldstein (Wareham, Mass.) scored twice in third period and Southern New Hampshire University claimed a 3-1 victory at St. Michael's College on Saturday.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

  • Freshman Phil Heisse (Overland Park, Kan.) picked up his first career goal.
  • Junior DJ Goldstein (Wareham, Mass.) scored twice in the third period for SNHU.
  • Junior Kurt Gutting (Weymouth, Mass.) stopped 34 of 35 shots to improve to 7-3-3 in net this season for the Penmen.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Penmen took a 1-0 lead at 5:39 of the first period when a blast from Heisse inside the blue line found its way into the net.  It was his first career goal.  Freshmen Dominic DiMambro (Troy, Mich.) and Andy Somerville (Medford, Mass.) picked up the assists.
  • For the second consecutive night, Saint Michael's evened the score with a power play goal.  Thomas Flack picked up his second goal of the weekend series at 10:58 of the second period.
  • Goldstein put SNHU in front, scoring the game-winning goal at 10:43 of the third period.  He poked home a loose puck to left side of Purple Knight goalie Tim Decker.  The assists went to freshman Travis Quigley (North Babylon, N.Y.) and senior Joseph Berardi (Burlington, Mass.)
  • The Penmen received an insurance goal at 17:36 when Goldstein took a pass from Berardi, who was behind the net, and slapped it home.  Quigley also picked up his second assist of the night on this marker.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Southern New Hampshire was outshot 35-32.
  • The Penmen went 0-for-4 with a man advantage, Saint Michael's was 1-for-4.
  • SNHU won the season series with a win and two ties in the three games played against the Purple Knights.

NOTES

  • Goldstein has tallied four goals this season.  He scored his first two goals of 2018-19 in the Saint Anselm game on November 9.  
  • SNHU is 23-40-6 all-time against St. Michael's.
  • With 12 points, the Penmen top the NE10 table with a 5-3-2 league mark.  Assumption is tied with Saint Michael's with 11 points.  Saint Anselm, with ten points, is currently in fourth place but has three games in hand on SNHU.
