Rookie Thurston Scores Four As Penmen Win NE10 Opener

Freshman George Thurston (Plymouth, Mass.) scored four times as SNHU turned back Franklin Pierce 5-1 on Friday night in the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both teams.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
  • Sophomore Alex Ring (Salem, N.H.) gave the Penmen a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 14:38 of the first period.  Freshman Matt Monreal (Wauwatosa, Wisc.) and junior Max Kent (Sandwich, Mass.) picked up the assists.  This was Ring's first career goal.
  • Thurston scored SNHU's other four goals.  His first came with a man advantage at 19:26 of the first period with a tip-in.  These were his first four collegiate scores.
  • Thurston scored again in the second period- and added two more goals in the third after Franklin Pierce lit the lamp for the first time.
  • Freshman James Nash (Hampton, N.H.) had three assists on the Thurston tallies.  Sophomore Joe Fiorino (Willow Grove, Pa.) assisted on two goals, as did sophomore Jake Cox (Columbus, Ga.) and Monreal.
  • Senior Kurt Gutting (Weymouth, Mass.) made 33 saves in net to earn his first win of the season.
NOTES
  • The Penmen outshot the Ravens 37-34 and continued to play well on the power-play, going 4-for-8.  SNHU has scored eight power-play goals in its first three games.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen will play at Framingham State on Saturday at 7:40 p.m.  The Rams are 0-2-0 after falling to UMass-Dartmouth on Tuesday night.
  • The next home game at The Ice Den will come on Saturday, November 30 in the opening game of the Manchester PAL Cup against Morrisville at 1:50 p.m.
