Sophomore Fernando Torres (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) captured his No. 6 singles match, but the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season, as it fell to Palm Beach Atlantic University, 5-2, Saturday at the USTA National Campus is Lake Nona, Fla.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Torres recorded a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles over Miguel Paz.
- Seniors Bas van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands) and Willem van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands) secured the doubles point for the Penmen, winning the deciding match at No. 1 against Roberto Binaghi and Philipp Hoffmann, 6-3.
- Sophomore Emmanuel Vacalares (Cagayan de Oro, Philippines) and freshman Oscar Hawken (Oslo, Norway) started off doubles play with a 6-1 win at No. 3 versus Umberto Rosi and Jorge Santamaria.
NOTES
- SNHU has its five-match winning streak to begin the season snapped, while PBAU has won three of its last four.
- The Penmen are the No. 2-ranked team in the ITA East Region Rankings, while the Sailfish are ninth in the South.
- Willem van Biezen is No. 14 in the nation in singles, as well as the top-ranked player in the East Region, but was outlasted at No. 1 by Rosi, 2-6, 6-3, 11-9. Bas van Biezen is 49th in the country and No. 2 in the region, and was upended at No. 2 by Hoffmann, 6-0, 6-3. As a doubles tandem, the duo is sixth, regionally.
- Vacalares is No. 19 in singles in the region. He fell to Binaghi, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 3.
