Thurston Nets Hat Trick For Fifth Straight Win

Junior George Thurston (Plymouth, Mass.) scored a hat trick, including two of three SNHU power-play goals, in Friday night's 6-4 ice hockey win over Saint Anselm at The Ice Den.

  • Senior Jake Cox (Columbus, Ga.) - goal, two assists
  • Senior Cole Stewart (Alpharetta, Ga.) - goal, assist
  • Freshman Jack Gray (Lowell, Mass.) - goal
  • Senior Joseph Fiorino (Willow Grove, Pa.) - two assists
  • Senior Adam Mercer (Belchertown, Mass.) improved to 4-0, making 42 saves.
KEY MOMENTS
  • The Penmen took a 1-0 lead at 4:04 of the first period on a goal by Cox.  Thurston passed to Cox, who buried a blast from the left side.
  • Gray scored his second of the season at 11:55 with a low slap shot that found the left side of the net.
  • Stewart would add a power-play marker at 18:49 off good teamwork with linemates Thurston and sophomore Matt Amante (West Hempstead, N.Y.) to make it 3-0.
  • The Hawks added a goal by Sean Healey in the closing seconds of the period for the first goal for the visitors.
  • Thurston's first goal of the game, a power play marker at 3:17 of the second period put SNHU back up by three goals at 4-1.  Fiorino and Cox helped set it up.
  • Goals by Andrew Andary and Liam Lyons for Saint Anselm made it 4-3.  Lyons connected top shelf on a low angle blast to the left of Mercer.
  • Another Thurston power-play goal at 6:33 from Fiorino made it 5-3, but the Hawks answered 90 seconds later on a goal by Jack Murphy.
  • Thurston completed the hat trick with an empty-netter with 19 seconds to go.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Hawks outshot the Penmen for the game 46-35 with a 20-7 advantage in the the third period.  
  • SNHU went 3-for-6 on the power-play while holding the Hawks to 0-for-3.
NOTES
  • This was the first of three contests between the teams this season.   The Hawks lead the all-time series 37-10-1, but the Penmen have won five of the last six meetings.
  • SNHU has the top four scorers in the NE10, led by Thurston with 15 points.  Cox has 13, Stewart nine, and Fiorino eight.  Thurston is tops with ten goals.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • SNHU will travel to Stonehill on Saturday for a 4:30 p.m. contest.  The next games at The Ice Den will come in the 26th annual Stovepipe Tournament next Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 27/28).
