Men's Tennis Caps Regular Season with 6-1 Win at Saint Michael's; Earns No. 2 Seed

Freshman Sam Goddard (Amherst, N.H.) won both his matches, including the match clincher at No. 5 singles, as the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team collected a 6-1 win against Saint Michael's College on Thursday afternoon in the regular-season finale at Tarrant Recreation Center.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
  • Goddard defeated Luke Ramsay, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5 singles, in addition to teaming with sophomore Noah Dubitzky (Marlborough, Conn.), for a 6-2 triumph against Ramsay and Constantin Krogh at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point.
  • Graduate student Bas van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands) was a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) winner at No. 1 singles against Josh Weiss and also combined with his brother and classmate Willem van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands) to edge Weiss and Jason Boucher, 6-4, at No. 1 doubles.
  • Willem van Biezen took down Boucher at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-4.
  • Junior Fernando Torres (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) breezed to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles versus Tyler Whitney. He and senior Guido Janssen (Zeewolde, Netherlands) also posted a 6-1 win against Connor Scott and Tyler Whitney at No. 2 doubles.
  • Dubitzky made quick work of Jack Gunning, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6 singles.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire has now captured six five straight.
  • SNHU clinches the No. 2 seed for the upcoming Northeast-10 Championship, where it will host a first round contest against the seventh-seeded Purple Knights on Saturday.
  • Southern New Hampshire, which is looking to make it five straight league titles (the NE10 Championship was not held last season) is 16-9 (.640) all-time in the NE10 Championship with six conference crowns and has met Saint Michael's one previous time, coming away with a 5-2 quarterfinal victory in 2009.
  • The Penmen also beat Saint Michael's, 6-1, at home back on April 6.
  • SNHU has now captured 53 of its last 54 matches against NE10 foes, including the postseason, dating back to Oct. 15, 2015.
  • The Penmen are ranked second in the ITA East Region.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The second-seeded Penmen play host to seventh-seeded Saint Michael's College in an NE10 Championship first round match at the Penmen Stadium Tennis Courts on Saturday, April 24 (1 p.m.).
